Phonetics and Phonology then , and then , and now 1

چکیده
Phonetics attempts to describe and understand how speech is produced and perceived; phonology attempts to understand the patterning—in general, the behavior—of speech sounds in particular languages and in all languages. Is phonetics part of phonology? This straightforward question has received various answers at different points in the history of linguistics. In this paper I attempt to document that for the two centuries starting approximately with the eighteenth century, phonetics was well integrated into linguistics but that around the start of the 20 century phonetics and phonology were estranged, at least in some cases. During the second half of the 20 century there began a trend, continuing today, to re-integrate phonetics and phonology.

Autonomy, as soon as possible
To explain my thoughts on this, I will report the highlights of the research I have been carrying out into (1) how children learn to talk and (2) why, therefore, the phonetics/phonology of English in mature speakers is the way that it is. I will then relate this to L2 learners, in order to ask what we can realistically expect students to do on their own, with and without help from technology, a...
متن کاملVowel Shifts and Phonology Phonetics Interface
1. I will be arguing from data on vowel shifts in progress, and from principles of language change, that language specific phonetic implementation rules must be part of speaker knowledge, and thus part of language acquisition. Then, I will sketch an abstract model of what phonetic implementation could be like. Having argued these points, I will address how this approach interacts with phonologi...
متن کاملOn the Relationship between Phonology and Phonetics (or Why Phonetics Is Not Phonology)
In this presentation, I argue that unifying phonetics and phonology in the grammar has undesirable consequences. Evidence for this position is provided from various sources, but focuses on intonation, an area of linguistic structure that has often been viewed as not requiring an abstract phonological representation.
متن کاملDeveloping a methodology for studying sign language phonetics
The increasing availability of technology to measure human movement has presented exciting new possibilities for analysing natural sign language production. Up until now, most descriptions of sign movement have been pro-duced in the context of theoretical phonology. While such descriptions are useful, they have the potential to mask subtle distinctions in articulation across signers or across s...

This paper touches on a range of conceptual and practical issues that are relevant to current discussions regarding the nature of the phonological component of the grammar, including: featural, representational and constraint economy; representation versus evaluation; computation versus competence; the line between phonetics and phonology; categorical perception; full-specification of features ...
